Telecommunication Glossary

The Telco industry in Australia is full of acronyms and expressions. At Infiniti Telecommunications we demystify the "geek speak" for our clients. We hope the following glossary of commonly used terms clarifies things for you.

PSTN Lines - Normal copper phone lines that most homes and businesses have.

ISDN - Digital phone lines. Also allow you to make and take phone calls. The difference is that ISDN allows you to have DID (refer below) as well as CLI.

DID (Direct-In-Dial) - You have a main advertised number in addition to individual numbers for staff. This allows callers to bypass reception and ring a person directly.

CLI (Caller Line Identification) - Allows you to see on screen the number of the person calling - providing that their number is not blocked (like mobile phones).

VOICEMAIL - Each user has their own voicemail box. Exactly the same as a mobile phone.

Auto Attendant/ACD (Automatic Call Distribution) - The phone system actually answers phone calls. I am sure you have experienced "thank you for calling we will be with you in a moment" or "press 1 for sales, 2 for admin etc". It answers the phone even when you can't.

VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) - New technology, allows voice to travel over an internet connection. It doesn't require phone lines to be able to speak to someone. It often sounds great but is not suitable for every business because of the extra equipment costs.

Call Accounting - Plugs into your phone system and tells you how many calls are being received, being made, by whom, for how long - great tool for management, especially where there are call centres.

LIU - Attaches to your phone system so you can plug in radio, CD players and on-hold equipment. Acts like a simple surge protector.

Messages on Hold - Professionally recorded messages that play when customers are placed on hold.

Digital Extensions - Fancy word for new digital handsets.

Analogue Extensions - Old fashioned handsets like those people have at home. Analogue Extensions on a phone system also allow you to plug in answering machines, cordless phones, fax machines etc... directly into your phone system.

Main Equipment - The box that goes on the wall, brain that drives the system.
