"Using a phone may not cause the pain, but it can certainly exacerbate it," says New York City orthopedic and sports medicine/shoulder surgeon Beth E. Shubin Stein, M.D., who was not affiliated with the study. "When you tilt your head to cradle the phone on your shoulder, you stress the cervical [neck] muscles," she explains.
